"Make everything as simple as possible, but not simpler."
Albert Einstein
Technical communication is a field that deals with conveying
technical information to the intended audience in a clear
concise and easily understandable manner. Its goal is to make
technologies more useful and meaningful and scientific information
more accessible. Technical communication
refers to any type of communication, however, technical writing is
the commonest. The outcome of the work of a technical writer is
a manual (whatever type), online help, training or any type of help content.
It is crucial that technical writers know the audience of their writing so that they are able to adjust the writing style to the reader. A manual for a service technician will differ in many aspects from a manual for an inexperienced user.
Unfortunately, in Poland there are no university programs for technical communicators yet and all information about technical communication we owe comes from the United States or the Western Europe. Another country where technical writing is extremely popular is India.
Tools that technical writers use to author their content include: Adobe FrameMaker, Adobe RoboHelp, WebWorks ePublisher, Epic Editor, MS Word and many others.
Frequently, the value of good documentation is underestimated by engineers or project managers, especially those who do not follow the newest trends in technology and are not customer focused. A connection between a satisfied user and a good documented product is clearly visible, hence the demand for skilled technical writers in the hi-tech industry.
